Antimicrobial Coatings For Orthopedic Implants

A growing area of interest in orthopedics is the prevention of biofilm formation and growth. Infection is a concern affecting 1-2% of those receiving a total-joint replacement. Current solutions have drawbacks including antibiotic resistance, cost, and duration of effectiveness. Therefore, there is a growing interest in exploring the applicability of new super hydrophobic coatings on the surface of total-joint implants for corrosion and biofilm prevention. We are interested in investigating novel compounds and techniques for the synthesis of antimicrobial coatings for mitigation of implant associated infection.
