What is going on in the lab?

2017:

  • August: Alikhan and Zarraf conclude their summer internships by presenting their research work during undergraduate events (Clark Scholar and LSAMP programs) held at UTD. And we welcome a new semester! Happy Fall 2017 everyone.
  • July: Congrats to the BONE Lab for receiving a R01 grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH-NIDCR) to study the effect and performance of our ionic liquid coatings in vivo. Paper "In vitro and in vivo characterization of premixed PMMA-CaP composite bone cements" published in ACS Biomaterials. Congrats to the BONE lab members Jason and Danyal for completing their first half marathon! Great job team!
  • June: Congrats to our Sutton for successfully defending her MS thesis, we are so proud of you! She has been with the BONE lab since her early undergrad days. The lab welcomes new students this month, Zarraf Arefeen (Clark Scholar), Alikhan Fidai (NSF LSAMP scholar), Shaida Parsaei and Sanjana Jain. Welcome everyone and happy summer!
  • May: Graduation month! Congrats to Vidya for graduating with a MS degree in bioengineering and Jason for graduating with a BS degree. You will both be missed in the lab, thanks for all your contributions and we wish you the best of luck. We welcome Lidia Guida in joining the lab as an undergrad researcher. This month our lab celebrated the end of another successful semester and graduates with a lab hike at the Cedar Ridge Preserve in Dallas! Good job everyone for tackling those hills!
  • April: Danyal was awarded with the Eugene McDermott Graduate Fellowship. Congrats Danyal on another outstanding achievement! Dr. Rodrigues gives a panel talk on Functional Osseointegration during the Society for Biomaterials (SFB), held in Minneapolis, MN. Pavan gives a podium presentation at SFB and was awarded with the SFB STARs Travel Award. Silvia Gallegos joined the lab as a MS student. Paper "Investigation of the corrosive effects of dental cements on titanium" accepted for publication in the Journal of Bio- and Tribo-Corrosion". Congrats to Danyal for winning the 3M thesis competition at UTD. Way to go Danyal and we look forward to seeing you competing in the next level!
  • March: The BONE Lab was very busy this month getting ready to present in a number of conferences. Dr. Rodrigues gave two podium talks at the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) held in Orlando, FL. Jason presented posters at the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS) in San Diego, CA. Dr. Rodrigues, Sathya, Danyal, and Sutton gave podium talks, and Pavan and Freddie presented posters at the International Academy of Dental Research (IADR) held in San Francisco, CA. Joel Jacobs joined the lab as an undergraduate research assistant. Danyal was awarded with the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRF); congrats Danyal we are very proud of this outstanding achievement! Second time a BONE Lab member is awarded with the NSF graduate research fellowship! Way to go!
  • February: Congratulations to Thao for being accepted at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Congratulations to Jason for being accepted at Cornell University. We are very proud of you both!
  • January: Happy New Year! Congrats to Vidya for successfully defending her MS thesis! BONE lab has its first gathering of the year! We are off to a great and productive start…

2016:

  • December: Congrats to Gina for successfully defending her MS thesis! Congrats to Danyal, Pavan and Deepthi for graduating! So proud of this amazing group of students. Fall semester ends! Happy holidays everyone.
  • November: Freddie and Jason presented posters at the undergraduate day. Abstracts accepted for oral presentations at the Academy of Ossoeintegration (AO) and International & American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) 2017. Paper “Biomechanical behavior of novel composite PMMA-CaP bone cements in an anatomically accurate cadaveric vertebroplasty model” accepted for publication in the Journal of Orthopedic Research. Paper “In vitro effects of dental cements on hard and soft tissues associated with dental implants” accepted for publication in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Jason and Freddie awarded with undergraduate research awards. Sathya, Vidya, Pavan and Deepthi presented their work during the American Society of Microbiology (ASM). Congratulations to Pavan and Deephti for successfully defending their MS thesis! Congrats.
  • October: Deepthi and Sutton presented oral table clinics presentations at AAIDR held in New Orleans LA. Congratulations to Sutton for receiving an award for the table clinics presentation! Congratulations to Danyal for being awarded with ECS Graduate Fellowship. Dr. Rodrigues awarded with a grant from ITI (International Team for Implantology) and a research grant from Doxa Dental. Paper “In vitro effects of dental cements on hard and soft tissues associated with dental implants” accepted for publication in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
  • September: Paper Corrosion and wear performance of titanium and cobalt chromium molybdenum alloys coated with dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids accepted for publication in the Journal of Bio and Tribocorrosion.
  • August: Fall semester starts! We dedicated this month to prepare several abstracts for upcoming conferences. Paper Improvement of tribological and anti-corrosive performance of titanium surfaces coated with dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids published in RSC advances. Lilian Zhan joins the lab as an undergraduate research student, she will work on the optimization of a testing chamber for the synergistic mechanical setup that will enable bacterial culture flow during mechanical testing.
  • July: This month involved a lot of preparations and mocks for defenses. Congratulations to Iza for an outstanding PhD defense. We are so proud of what you have achieved in these last 3 years; we will miss you around the lab. Congratulations to Danyal for successfully defending his MS project. We are so excited you are staying and continuing in the lab. A very productive month in the lab!
  • June: The lab welcomes a new summer scholar Shruti Natarajan (Clark Scholar Program). We also had two scholars from Brazil (Claudia and Franco) visiting our lab and running corrosion experiments on titanium disks. Paper “Synthesis and Characterization of New Chlorhexidine-Containing Nanoparticles for Root Canal Disinfection” published in the Materials Journal. Paper “Stem geometry changes initial femoral fixation stability of a revised press-fit hip prosthesis: a finite element study” (Russell RD et al.) accepted for publication in Technology and Health Care Journal.
  • May: Graduation month! We are so proud to see Shant and Lucas walking the commencement stage as PhD graduates. Congratulations to all of our Spring 2016 graduates (Shant, Lucas and Zain). Congratulations to Zain for graduating with a BS degree in Biology, he is starting medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton. You all will be missed in the lab, thanks for all the contributions.
  • April: And the month started with Lucas’ PhD dissertation defense! Congratulations Lucas for successfully defending your PhD! Lucas was the first student to join the Bone Lab and has tremendously contributed to set up the lab. We will miss you but are happy that you are sticking around UTD for a little while.   • March: Busy month in the lab as we get prepared for Lucas’ dissertation defense and gear up for the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS). Article In vitro evaluation of the effects of multiple oral factors on dental implants surfaces accepted for publication in the Journal of Oral Implantology. Paper Evaluation of mammalian and bacterial cell activity on titanium surface coated with dicationic imidazolium based ionic liquids accepted for publication in RSC Advances. Gina, Danyal and Vidya present posters at ORS, which was held in Orlando, Fl.
  • February: With the move complete the lab is in full operation again. All equipment is up and running and we can go back to our experiments. Article Corrosion behavior of zirconia in acidulated phosphate fluoride published in the Journal of Applied Oral Sciences. Article In vitro evaluation of titanium exfoliation during simulated surgical insertion of dental implants published in the Journal of Oral Implantology. Paper Use of dicationic ionic liquids as a novel platform for dielectrophoretic cell manipulation published in RSC Advances.
  • January: Spring semester starts with the lab move to the new BSB building. This month was all about packing and getting ready for the move. All the equipment has been shut down and the old lab dismantled.

2015:

  • December: This was a very special and important month for the lab. Shant Aghyarian successfully defended his PhD dissertation, we are all proud as this was the first PhD defense from our lab. Great job Shant and we wish you all the best in the future and we will miss you in the lab. Paper “Corrosion behavior of zirconia in acidulated phosphate fluoride” accepted for publication in the Journal of Oral Science. Cole and Juli graduated with a BSc degree in bioengineering. Juli was accepted as a MS student in the department of bioengineering at UTD and will continue her projects in the lab. And to close the celebrations of this month, baby Samuel was born on December 10th.
  • November: Paper "Ionic Liquid Coatings for Titanium Surfaces: Effect of IL Structure on Coating Profile" accepted for publication in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. This month the lab is gearing up and practicing for its first PhD dissertation defense scheduled for December.
  • October: Shant presented a poster at the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) in Tampa, Fl. Juliana and Catherine received research scholarships from the Office of the Vice President for Research at UTD.
  • September: it is all about writing this month, everyone is working hard to get papers out. Shant had an abstract accepted for presentation during the Biomedical Engineering Society to be held in October in Tampa FL. Catherine Davis joins the lab.
  • August: Freddie presents a poster during the Clark Scholar Research Day held at UTD. Danyal presented a poster on his summer research at the FDA. Congratulations to Izabelle and Shant for being awarded with ECS Graduate Fellowships! Fall 2015 semester starts. Shant is awarded with the BMES travel grant. Congratulations for all the achievements this summer!
  • July: Dr. Rodrigues gives a seminar at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and visit its dental school facilities. Congratulations to Sathya for successfully defending his dissertation proposal! Lab hosts activity for the EUREKA Girls Inc. UTD summer program. Lab hosted its annual summer party!
  • June: The lab welcomes two summer scholars, Frederick Wang (Clark Scholar Program) and Michael Farid (PISD Scholar). Paper “Two novel high performing composite PMMA-CaP cements for vertebroplasty: An ex vivo animal study” accepted for publication in the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials. Dr. Rodrigues and Izabelle give seminars at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (Santa Maria, Brazil) sponsored by the Center for U.S.-Latin America Initiatives (CUSLAI).
  • May: Congratulations to our first class of graduates in Bioengineering! Congrats to Danyal, Maria, Sutton, Ridwan, Michael and Max. Congratulations to Tatum for graduating with a degree in Biology. These guys will be missed in the lab! Kayam Hamdar (Universidade Federal do Parana, Curitiba, Brazil) joins the lab as a Science Without Borders Summer Scholar. We welcome the beginning of the summer!
  • April: Congratulations to Maria for being awarded with the NSF Graduate Student Fellowship. Congratulations to Danyal for obtaining a summer internship with the FDA! Our undergraduate students (Danyal, Saad, Maria, Jonathan and Ridwan) presented posters during the UTD undergraduate poster competition. Congratulations to Danyal for being selected as a finalist for the poster competition. Jonathan gave a podium presentation at the business meeting at the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) held in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Rodrigues is awarded with the CUSLAI (Center for U.S.-Latin America Initiatives) Research Award. Lindsey Gore joins the lab. Congratulations to our senior undergraduate students (Juli, Danyal, Maria, Max, Michael, Ridwan) for presenting their senior design projects.
  • March: Congratulations to Lucas for successfully defending his PhD proposal! Third PhD candidate of the BONE Lab. Paper “In-vitro evaluation of titanium exfoliation during simulated surgical insertion of dental implants” published in the Journal of Oral Implantology. Paper “Effect on aggregation behavior of long-chain spacers of dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids in aqueous solution” published in Colloids and Surfaces A Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects. Lucas presented a podium talk and Izabelle and Sathya presented posters at the Academy of Osseointegration held in San Francisco, CA. Izabelle presented a podium presentation at the NACE Corrosion symposium held in Dallas, TX. Maria presented a poster during the Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol held in Austin, TX.
  • February: New graduate students join the lab, welcome Vidya, Pavanpreet and Deepthi! The lab attended and presented at the first clinical dental research meeting held at the North Dallas Dental Health. Izabelle, Lucas, and Sathya received travel awards to attend the Academy of Osseointegration to be held in San Francisco next month. Paper “In Vitro Investigation of the Effect of Oral Bacteria in the Surface Oxidation of Dental Implants” published in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related.
  • January: And another semester starts! Paper “Characterization of cement particles found in peri-implantitis human biopsies” accepted for publication in the Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants. Izabelle had a paper accepted for oral presentation during the CORROSION 2015 Conference. Our collaborator, Dr. Francisco Montagner from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil (UFRGS) visited us for two weeks an gave two lectures to the group: Clinical seminar 1: Endodontic infections – current status and perspectives. 2014:

  • December: And our lab close a very productive year with two papers accepted for publication: "Effects of decontamination solutions on the surface of titanium: investigation of surface morphology, composition and roughness" and "Aggregation behavior of long – chain spacer dicationic imidazolium based ionic liquid in aqueous solution". Jonathan and Lucas won first place with the UTD Business Competition with Osteoink Bone Cement in the graduate category. Lucas, Jonathan, Sathya and Izabelle had their papers accepted for oral and poster presentation during the Academy of Osseointegration 2015. Jonathan had his abstract accepted for oral presentation during the Society for Biomaterials 2015.
  • November: Dr. Rodrigues gave a talk during the 36th International Conference of Metallurgy and Materials in Saltillo, Mexico. Paper “Dicationic Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids: A New Strategy for Biocompatible and Antimicrobial Materials accepted for publication in the RSC Advances Journal”. Jonathan, Elizabeth, Max, Juliana presented posters during the IEEE-EMBS conference held at the University of Texas at Dallas with Elizabeth and Max winning the poster competition. The BONE lab hosted the bioengineering activity during the “Design Your World” event organized by the Society for Women in Engineering. Elizabeth, Ridwan, Danyal, Saad, Jonathan and Maria received research scholarships from the Office of the Vice President for Research at UTD.
  • October: Congrats to Izabelle for successfully defending her PhD proposal! Second PhD candidate of the BONE lab! Maria, Ridwan, Elizabeth, Jonathan and Sutton presented posters at the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) in San Antonio, TX. Gina Quiram joins the lab.
  • September: Congrats to Shant for successfully defending his PhD proposal! First PhD candidate of the lab! Laura presented a poster during the UT System Conference in El Paso TX, winning second place in the Research LSAMP Presentation Competition. Paper “Novel antimicrobial and bioactive bone cement: antimicrobial effectiveness and cement strength” accepted for publication in the Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers. Paper “Preparation and characterization of injectable brushite filled-poly (methyl methacrylate) bone cement” published in the Materials Journal. Maria, Ridwan, Elizabeth, Jonathan and Sutton had abstracts accepted for presentation during the Biomedical Engineering Society to be held in October.
  • August: Izabelle, Laura and Elizabeth present posters during the AVS conference hosted by at UTD on August 6th. Elizabeth presents a poster during the Clark Scholar Research Day held at UT Dallas on August 8th. Paper “Foreign bodies associated with peri-implantitis human biopsies” accepted for publication in the Journal of Periodontology. Paper: “Investigation of the effect of oral bacteria in the surface oxidation of dental implants”. Accepted for publication in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research Journal.
  • July: Paper “Characterization of a new composite PMMA-HA/Brushite bone cement for spinal augmentation” published online in the Journal of Biomaterials Applications. Lab worked hard in getting abstracts and manuscripts completed this month.
  • June: Ridwan, Elizabeth, Sathya and Shant present posters at the Biomaterials Research Day at Texas A&M University. New interns join the lab for the summer, Maria Laura Rodriguez from UT El Paso (LSAMP Program) and Karthik Prabhakaran from Plano East High (PISD Program). Paper “Preparation of TiO2 Nanoparticles Coated with Ionic Liquids: A Supramolecular Approach” published in the ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces Journal. Abstracts accepted for presentation in the Corrosion 2015 Conference (Sathya, Izabelle).
  • May: Commencement month. Congrats to Pegah and Lucas for graduating with a MS degree in Bioengineering. New equipment received in the lab (Gamry Potentiostat and Automatic Polisher). New undergraduate students join the BONE lab, welcome Saad, Tatum, Danyal and Max. Neodent Launch Party at the W hotel. Summer kick off with a group paintball activity!
  • April: End of another semester! Sathya gave a podium presentation and Shant presented a poster at the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) held in Denver, CO. Sathya defended his Master thesis on the development of techniques to study the effect of bacteria and mechanical factors on the surface of dental implants. Elizabeth, Michael, Ridwan, Maria and Jonathan presented posters during the UTD Undergraduate Research Day. Michael and Ridwan are selected as finalists among 12 posters. Michael and Ridwan present again their poster to a jury of industry and academia members and are awarded with first place in the poster competition. Sutton, Jonathan and Ridwan present posters at the American Academy of Anatomists (AAA) in San Diego, CA.
  • March: This was a very productive month for the BONE lab. Arvind, Sathya and Maria gave podium presentations at the NACE conference and Izabelle presented a poster. Maria and Dr. Rodrigues presented posters during the Academy of Osseointegration. Lucas presented a poster during the Orthopedic Research Society. Jonathan was accepted in the REU Interactive Biomaterials program from Syracuse University for the Summer. Maria was awarded with the Goldwater scholarship and Michael received Goldwater honor mention. Lucas defended his Maters Thesis on the development of composite bone cements for orthopedic and craniofacial surgery. Paper “Surface Characterization of Retrieved Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Implants with Adverse Reaction to Metal Debris” published in the Materials Journal. Congratulations lab!
  • February: Sathya, Maria and Izabelle are awarded with NACE travel awards. Dr. Mathew Mathew from the Rush Medical Center (Chicago, IL) gives a lecture on tribocorrosion (The role of tribocorrosion on early failures of dental and orthopedic implants). Dr. Rodrigues gives a seminar at UTSW (Biomaterials for orthopedic and dental applications: tuning bulk and surface properties for improved in vivo performance). Abstracts accepted for podium and poster presentation (Sathya, Lucas and Shant) during the Society for Biomaterials, to be held in Denver in April. Dr. Rodrigues gives a talk in Syracuse University (Tribocorrosion of dental and orthopedic implants).
  • January: Abstract accepted for poster presentation (Izabelle) during NACE. Lucas, Shant and Izabelle pass the bioengineering qualifying exam! Congrats for officially entering the PhD program. Lab received new equipment (MEGA 250 saw from Pace Technologies).

2013:

  • December: Anie graduates with a MS degree in Bioengineering. Maria and Michael received Cyrus Cantrell III Phi Kappa Phi Travel Grants. Dr. Rodrigues is awarded with a research grant from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAIDF) to study the effects of bacterial and mechanical loading on the corrosion of dental implants. Anie, Sathya and Maria had abstracts accepted for podium presentation at the Corrosion Symposium (NACE) to be held in San Antonio TX in March. Abstract accepted (Lucas) for poster presentation during the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS) to be held in New Orleans in March.
  • November: Shant presented an e-Poster during the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) in Las Vegas. Maria, Arvind, Michael, and Jonathan presented posters during the 2nd IEEE-EMB Medical Device Symposium held at UTD. Shant, Lucas, Danieli, Maria, Arvind and Ridwan ran the Fort Worth Half Marathon (Fort Worth, TX), everyone finished well and happy!! Congratulations to the first time half-marathoners! Paper on corrosion of dental implants is published in the Materials Journal.
  • October: Jonathan, Ridwan, Maria, Elizabeth and Michael were awarded with undergraduate scholarships. Maria, Jonathan and Ridwan gave podium presentations, and Sathya, Anie, Sutton and Maria presented posters during the Regional AAA meeting held in Dallas. Jonathan and Maria were awarded first and second place undergraduate podium presentation, Anie was awarded with first place graduate poster, and Sutton was awarded second place undergraduate poster. Arvind, Lucas, Michael and Elizabeth also attended the conference. Lucas presented an e-Poster during the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty held in Palm Beach, Fl. Sathya presented an e-Poster during the CARE fair held at Baylor College of Dentistry (Dallas, TX) and was awarded with the best presentation in the inter-institutional collaboration category.
  • September: This month the lab worked full force preparing abstracts for the AAA conference to be held in October here in Dallas. Our lab submitted 7 abstracts to the conference, which all of them got accepted. We also had 1 abstract submitted to the 2013 CARE Fair (Sathya). Abstract accepted (Shant) for poster presentation during the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery to be held in Las Vegas, NV, November 1-3. Maria was awarded with a scholarship from the SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers). Paper accepted (Danieli) for publication in the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Engineering. Misha Rubanov joins the lab.
  • August: Elizabeth Bentley presents a poster during the Clark Scholar Research Day held at UT Dallas on August 9th. Lab move to Berkner Building (BE 2.520). Lab received 2 new equipment (Nanodrop UV-vis and Buhler Polisher!). Izabelle Gindri arrives in the US. Lab hosted the first picnic at Breckinridge Park.
  • July: Abstract accepted (Lucas Rodriguez) for oral and poster presentation during the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty to be held in Palm Beach, FL, October 16-19; Article entitled: “The case for routine maintenance of dental implants”, accepted for publication in the Journal of Periodontology (Wilson et al.).
  • June: Shant Aghyarian joins the lab as a PhD student; Sathya Shridhar and Anie Thomas join the lab as MS students. Elizabeth Bentley joined the lab as a summer Clark Scholar. Patent on the two-solution bone cement is issued.
  • May: Lab is up and running in FO Building; Dr. Rodrigues is awarded with a research grant from the UT Transform Program for bone cement development; Michael Lau receives honorable mention with the Goldwater Scholarship; Diana Roy, Lana Kharza, Kevin Kdukwe, Sutton Wheelis, Muhammad Sajjed join the lab for the summer; Dr. Rodrigues gives a talk for the Dallas Metroplex AVS Student Chapter.
  • April: Lab move to Founders Building (FO 3.4); Installation of Keyence VHX-2000 Microscope; Izabelle Gindri is awarded with a graduate scholarship from the Science without Borders Program and will join the lab in August; Installation of the MTS system; Dr. Rodrigues receives the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Erik Jonson School of Engineering and Computer Science.
  • March: Lucas and Arvind present posters during the 7th Metroplex Day held at UT Dallas. Training and equipment installation is still going.
  • February: Installation of TA HR-3 Rheometer; Lucas Rodriguez gets accepted in Medical School (NOVA Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL).
  • January: Arvind Ramakrishnan joins the lab as a PhD student; Maria Salazar, Jonathan Chari, Rishi Samani join the lab as undergraduate research students; Dr. Rodrigues gives a podium presentation during the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX; Dr. Rodrigues gives a talk at the Baylor College of Dentistry Texas A&M, Dallas, TX.

2012:

  • December: Christian Beeman, Michael Lau, Ridwan Haseeb, Syeda Ahmed, Arvind Adapalli join the lab as undergraduate research students. Installation of equipment is still going.
  • November: Lab space is assigned in NSERL B.502; first equipment start to arrive; Lucas Rodriguez joins the lab as a MS student.
  • October/September: get equipment/supplies quotations, ordering, ordering, fun fun!!
  • August: First Fall semester starts, Dr. Rodrigues starts teaching Statics & Dynamics the first bioengineering undergraduate course offered by our department!
  • July: Dr. Rodrigues joins UTD.
